I just got the chance to watch the KdV episode last night, and I got goosebumps watching that part. Know that Ashley's words are missed and that you are in the thoughts of many.
(Rocky Ditcharo, a shrimp dock owner in Buras, La., said many fishermen hired by BP have told him that they often park their boats on the shore while they wait for word on where to go.
''They just wait because there's no direction,'' Ditcharo said. He said he believes BP has hired many boat captains ''to show numbers.'')
These cities rebuilt, each with little federal aid:
•Chicago: After the Great Fire destroyed 18,000 buildings and left 100,000 homeless (one in three residents), rebuilding in the "Burnt District" began almost immediately. Debris was pushed into Lake Michigan as landfill for a bigger city. The size of the central business district doubled, and taller buildings were constructed.
•San Francisco: The earthquake started fires that destroyed about three quarters of the city and left 300,000 homeless — half the population. City leaders began rebuilding immediately, abandoning for the sake of speed a master plan to beautify the city.
•Galveston: The year after the hurricane wrecked much of Galveston Island, a county referendum on a bond issue for a seawall passed by better than 9-to-1. The entire city was raised by more than 15 feet.

In fucking Chicago we held fundraisers, sent money, food and clothing (My American Legion, Church and the building where I work made this a top priority. People were in trouble and needed help. You couldn't go to the bank or grocery store without donating to Habitat for Humanity...all for the people in New Orleans. What did you do for the great fire?

I had the good fortune of having Ashley Morris as a professor. To say he was passionate about NOLA was an understatement. It should also be said that he was equally passionate about his work and an expert in the theoretical aspects of "fuzzy boundaries" within the database sub domain of computer science and fundamentally believed in leveraging technology to improve the quality of life for us all. I don't know how many people can say "A database class changed my life" but I am one. For this I am profoundly grateful. I'm off to NO the week after next to see what all the hellabaloo, we are talking about Ashley so yes hell not hull, was about. I hope he can can appreciate the irony of a me sipping on a Hurricane of Burban Street in his honor.
WE ALL SALUTE ASHLEY!!!!!
