It is fascinating to me how I changed since I came to US. While I am literally lying awake at night thinking what else I could do to help the people in Haiti, most Czech people seem to be just primitive racists. I am flabbergasted by a discussion about whether Haiti should be a slave nation owned by France... a discussion about the intelligence of black people - I mean I literally cannot get my head around it. How can anybody, I mean ANYBODY even the last redneck, think like that? I don't get it.
I am pretty sure I was never like them but it scared the heck out of me that I would ever get in a discussion with them. And in an informal pool by a leading Czech paper, something like 75% people said they will not contribute anything to the disaster funds. I don't know. Maybe they would need some good natural disaster over there. Then I could tell them how they are not worth saving.

Remember, you live in New Orleans where people are too polite (mostly) to say such things out loud, but this is a tiny island in the middle of the Red Neck Sea and you wouldn't have to go to far to find like minded people. (I remember a map I saw published somewhere of little dots representing lynchings and you could identify every population center in the South. It looked like one of those pictures of citty lights from space. Except, new Orleans had a very small number. Not zero, mind you, but not where near what it should have had relative to population).
Hell, take a right somewhere before you get to Baton Rouge and drive for 10 minutes.

That really is too bad, but somehow not surprising. No. I take that back. I'm always surprised that views like that persist. Go to one of my family reunions sometime. You'll see it in action. However, after having been through WW2 I'd have thought the Czech Republic would be somehow more sensitive to misery of any stripe.

I don't think we've ever met — but I met Ashley a couple times, and also I am of Czech heritage, and have been very interested in the questions of race and racism my entire life. It takes courage to speak on such matters and I sense a fine honesty in your words. I look forward to meeting you some day.

My goodness, I would never have thought the Czechs would be so racist given how enlightened many Czechs I have met in my life are. The land of Václav Havel has always seemed very open and friendly to me on my visits.
Given what the Haitians are going through I find it very difficult to comprehend such a lack of compassion.
Great blog btw. I hope you are well.

There are not many places with the rich mix of people we have in New Orleans. There were free people of color who came to New Orleans two hundred years ago. They were craftsmen and merchants and left a wealth of material culture as well as many descendants. New Orleans owes a debt to Haiti. In our own time, we also have faced natural disaster and can appreciate how much it means for people to care and try to help. Don't ever be surprised, though, by the capacity of people to remain ignorant and to hate. They are almost as great as the thirst for knowledge and the reality of love. I wish you and your children well.

I'm really sad why people think that way. People in Haiti really needs our help. We can just pray for them if we have nothing to offer. may God Bless us all

This is just frustrating. I hope those people would realize that what they are doing is extremely wrong and disappointing. People in Haiti need our prayers. :(

I can't believe these people.. :( People in Haiti experienced a tragedy and yet they're talking like this? This is disturbing.. I hope you guys can realize that Haiti people need our help. Not this kind of thing..! :(

OK - as per being slammed by my future-sister-in-law:
NOT all Czech people are rednecks. Only the one that expressed their selfish and inhumane opinions at major Czech newspapers.
And redneck is probably the right word - ignorant and callous would be better. It just does not sound as good as a "redneck"

Sorry - meant to say: redneck is NOT the right word
