My friend Ed Guevara died last night.
You may have known him. He grew up here in NOLA, and he and his dad ran a chemical concrete addditive company, and that additive was used in the Causeway and the Superdome. He went to both Newman and public schools. He met his lovely wife Carrie at Ms Mae's.
After Katrina, he moved to St. Mary's, GA, where his wife's family resided. Carrie and he opened up a cigar shop, with all those great masculine accoutrements that made one great: great cigars, wi-fi, leather chairs, flat screen tvs, good coffee, shaving mugs, and imported tea.
He had more ink than anybody else I knew, and that includes you, Ray.
He had an older son, Ian, who still lives here in New Orleans. Ian is an Eagle scout. He had two daughters, Caitlin and Sophia, who were just a bit older than my two daughters. We had great plans about how they would play together, but Katrina and the flood intervened.
For years he fought the game of NOLA schools valiantly, moving in and around the Lusher district. He finally moved into a nice place in Old Jeff, right by Ochsner. He said the best move was leaving NOLA public schools, and going to Jeff Parish.
For years, he managed Roman Pizza.
He designed the websites for both Uganda Roberts and Professor Longhair. He did this through his web and design companies: g-media and Cubano67.
Some of you may have met him at my birthday party last year.
He was a great father, husband, and friend. He was one of the nicest people I ever met. He was the most generous person I ever knew. I loved him. I will miss him.
I'm so sorry, Ashley. I wish I'd met him. Hell, I wish he was coming to this year's party...

I am so sorry to hear this news. As a fellow graduate from Newman, this is sad news indeed. He looks to be quite a young man. My condolences to his family and friends.

Ouch. That's terrible. I didn't know him well but he was a helluva nice guy with a very sweet wife. Poor Carrie.

Ash - that was so beautiful. I don't know what else to say but thank you. Thank you for knowing him that well. You meant so much to him.I'll never understand why a guy like that had to go so soon. I keep thinking I'll wake up and this will just be a bad dream.

Ash, that was heartfelt and touching. Anyone who knew Ed is simply stunned into depression right now, and most of us feel like Carrie does, it's such a bad dream.

Man, it's been a rough week for you. I remember meeting Ed at your party last year and feel really awful for his wife. Let me know if you need anything, Ashley, really.

I grew up about 40 minutes from St. Marys. My father has a hardware store in that area.
Your friends sounds like he was a wonderful person and an asset to the community. I read his obit. He died much too young.
Take good care of you and yours.

Ashley, thanks for the link. I am Carrie's dad. Ed was a very good man to my daughter and a wonderful, patient father to his girls. I miss him very much. I appreciate the link to the phots. I had not seen some of those. God Bless you
