I started this blog thinking that I would post something weekly, if not daily.
Well, priorities get shifted.
Last week, a radiologist told me that my 6 month old daughter, Annabel Lee, could have a tumor in her left kidney.
Priorities shift.
So I do the scientist thing that I do, and look at everything I can find on the web about childhood kidney tumors. The radiologist looked at the films, and claimed it to be a angiomyolipoma. This is typically a benign tumor in the kidney.
Priorities shift.
I also found some info about Wilm's Tumor. This is a nasty cancerous tumor in the kidneys, and one of the symptoms is an underdeveloped iris. My daughter had a ligament running across her iris, which the pediatric opthamologist said would go away eventually.
Priorities shift.
I found out last year that I was a bastard. Basically, I had the same circumstances around my birth that Jack Nicholson and Ted Bundy had. I was raised by my grandparents, and the person I was told was my sister was actually my mother. Well, this was a bombshell, indeed. Perhaps it would explain why my "sister" was refusing to disperse any of my "parents" estate. 4 years, and she hasn't done diddley yet. There's a hearing about it on March 1. In any case, when I found out about the tumor, I called my "sister" and my alleged biological father, and told them the circumstances. I told them to contact my physician and send him their family medical histories ASAP.
Priorities shift.
I threatened their lives if they did not send these histories. I truly meant it. If they conspired to hide the circumstances of my birth, well, that's one thing. If they lie about it, and I do not have an accurate medical history for my daughter's illness, well, that is something else entirely.
Priorities shift.
So for now, I will continue my work, which involves planning a move out of my house, moving to Prague on March 12, planning a new Master's degree program in Prague, teaching my two classes, reviewing several papers, teaching a 1 week class in Prague, and writing a couple of papers.
Priorities shift.
Today, Anna went in for a CAT scan. I should know the results on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Priorities shift.
Happy Mardi Gras.
Update: After the CT scan, the pediatric urologist determined that all is well. Amen.

I got to this post after reading about your mother/sister's death. I wanted to offer my sincere condolences. I also wanted to share that I also have a relative who was raised that way, and only found out his "older sister" was actually his mother very late in life. What a strange thing.

Ashley, I'm so sorry about the loss of you mother. I was adopted, but my adoption parents were always very honest about that. It must be strange to think back about growing up and relive all those moments with the knowledge that people weren't who they appeared to be. I wish you well,
Michael
